FAV Insignificance

We interrupt this regularly-scheduled reprieve for some breaking rant (brought to you by the Catholic Church and its unofficial CNN spokesperson, FAV Correspondent Delia Gallagher)...

I worked from home yesterday because... well, I was aching all over. And I caught Delia's 2:30pm hit on Live From... about... yes, the Catholic Church. I am Catholic (albeit not a very good one, at that) - and even I don't give a bleep! How insignificant was Delia's piece (about the Vatican wanting to change the words of the English mass)? So insignificant that as of this morning (16/6), the Catholic News Agency website hadn't even mentioned it on their front page. And even if it did, the truth is, any changes wouldn't be implemented this Sunday when you go to Church; not on the Feast of the Assumption this 15 August, not on Christ the King this November, most probably not even this Christmas.

And even if by some freakazoidical chance that they were implemented - I still don't give a bleep because as far as I'm concerned, the true meaning of the mass cannot be diminished by some weakly-translated, automatronic response from a booklet, or the language in which they were written! What's this joder about "being faithful to the Latin text"? Jesus didn't preach in Latin! Should we just translate the mass to Aramaic instead? Why are we concerned with these externalities when we should really be concerned with the health of our souls? Why are we so concerned over saying "in the spirit" vs. "and also with you" when we should be concerned about loving one another - yes, LOVE, which transcends language, time, and space.

True, this is The Delia Gallagher Admiration Society. But it's amazing how one can see more clearly when priorities are reorganized - and honesty is one of the priorites that made it to the top. I am not going to fawn over Delia anymore, I'm way past that. I am hoping to get out of my Delia indifference - even if it means being pissed - with the hope that I can point out this emerging Delia insignificance. I know I cannot do anything about it - Delia and her producers choose her stories , and my gawd, how worthless those stories have been- so all I can do is rant, and ranting is very exhausting, so I better rant well.

Okay, let's check the CNN Pipeline for the packages that Delia has posted and tell me what's wrong with this list:

Change to the Catholic Mass (1:07) 09:10 pm, Jun 15
Pope visits Auschwitz (:52) 06:34 pm, May 28
Atheist sues for proof of Jesus (4:07) 07:52 am, May 24
Inside Opus Dei
(6:50) 01:08 am, May 19
The model for 'Da Vinci's' villains

'Da Vinci Code' secrets (3:09) 10:21 am, May 17
The Pope's Final days
(1:44) 02:41 pm, Apr 13
Personal stories of Pope John Paul II
(9:10) 02:40 pm, Apr 13
Memories of the pope
(1:45) 02:40 pm, Apr 13
Plot against Pope (3:14) 06:17 am, Mar 04
Preaching politics?
(1:51) 02:21 am, Jan 25
Hasidic rebels (4:59) 03:57 pm, Jan 22
Michelangelo for sale (1:58) 05:48 am, Jan 19
Belief system tested (4:58) 01:34 am, Jan 18

Yes, 9 of the 14 stories (65%) she did this year were on the Catholic Church, 5 of the 9 were on the Pope. Did she really feel the need to tag along to Poland when CNN already had very able bodies on the ground, who, honestly, did a better job? (Besides, Hanna Smoktunowicz is HOT!) Did she need to chase the Knights Templars and the Masons all the way to England? Or go to Italy to report on the cabrĂ³n who is suing the Catholic church? What the joder do those stories mean to my life? When the US Senate voted against the Federal gay marriage amendment, where was the FAV girl? When both AC and Larry King devoted their shows to gayness, where the joder was the FAV person? Too busy looking for some obscure Catholic stories?

What is so maddening is how Delia is wasting away this opportunity. She has been given the opportunity to do something great, to cover a very large, integral beat, and instead of seizing that opportunity, she is tampering it down to total obscurity and insignificance! I am done blaming CNN for giving Delia crappy stuff - I am sure Delia can pitch whatever she wants to cover and if they're good enough, CNN would acquiece. But instead of doing the hard stories - the ones that would make your heart beat with anger and your soul cry with agony or scream with joy - Delia chooses the safe ones, the ones which would not make you bat an eyelash but would deluge you with so much fluff you'd feel covered in gooey marshmallow afterwards.

Choose the hard stories, Delia, choose the road less traveled. I promise you it's going to be so worth it.

Now back to our regularly scheduled blog reprieve.

I beg to differ. I bet Delia is pretty much told what she's going to cover. Remember, CNN is struggling for ratings, and heavy-duty stories on Pope Benedict's first year or how heavily religion affects American society and politics are sure to be overwhelmed by lifestyle pieces fitting with the emo-anchor vibe of Anderson Cooper. I say, be glad Delia has a regular job and we get to see her -- and just hope that someday soom there will be a faith and values story so important that CNN can't ignore it.

Thanks for the feedback, Anonymous. Let's just agree to differ because I cannot believe that CNN just tells Delia what to do and that is that. I bet she has a LOT of say in what stories she wants to cover. I mean - she hasn't done anything but Catholic stories lately - and that's a Delia thing. That's what she knows, and she's staying within the safety of her boundaries.

I wish her all the luck in the world, I really do, because I know for a fact the she IS a good person.

FYI - Delia actually chooses what stories to cover.

How do you know? Is that for a fact?

Shepherd, you are always ahead of your time. I look forward to a FAV significance blog in the future, Delia delivers naturally what others rehearse and fake and script, its simply overwhelming brain power. From an analytical viewpoint you are correct about the stories you have "scene." You fail however in your understanding of the business of cable news. Casting blame on a reporter about lack of diversity in stories misses the point. What haven't we seen? Is it possible the reporter has done stories that have not been aired, of course! Be intellectually honest. When you complained Delia wasn't on the air she in fact was working on a two hour documentary that aired three weeks later, you sometimes get it wrong. Give yourself some credit though Shepherd for being ahead of the curve, but recognize placing blame is not what us admirers visit your blog for. No doubt there are a number of forces at work in cable news.

PS...I'm not connected to the earlier posted comments.

Thanks for writing in. However, until I see something FAV-ly significant from Delia, I'd remain "so far ahead of time" I should be in China by now. "Overwhelming brain power"?

Nope, I don't know much about cable news and I don't intend to. As I said before, I wish Delia all the best, she is a great person. If I'm wrong on this one, I'd gladly give my Mea Culpa, although I don't think I am.
