Pro Death

So, Her Hotness, Delia Gallagher's home state of California executed Stanley Tookie Williams this morning. Is the world a better place because he's dead? I don't know, I highly doubt it. But he is dead, and that is that.

Everyone and his brother and sister had to weigh in on this story, CNN already beat it to death (pun intended!) with Becky Anderson's drag alter-ego, Ted Rowlands reporting. For those who do not believe in capital punishment, this was a cause worth fighting for, and for those who do, this was justice being served. Image hosted by Photobucket.comThere really is no changing anyone's mind on this issue - like abortion and gay marriage, the death penalty is another wedge on this great divide. The Vatican spoke: "We know the death penalty doesn't resolve anything," Cardinal Renato Martino told AP Television News. "Even a criminal is worthy of respect because he is a human being. The death penalty is a negation of human dignity" They, however, don't advocate denying communion to Catholic politicians who support the death penalty - Gov. Ahnuld and Hizzoner Rudy Giuliani among them.

Some Christian bloggers rejoiced over his death while pro-life right wingers were indignant - which really baffles the heck out of me. And then I remembered that the entire Christian world was based 0n Capital Punishment: no cross, no Christianity. If Jesus were here today, on death row, what would we freakin' do? If He was in Texas, the Governor would probably mock Him first before sending Him to the sweet hereafter. If He was in Florida or California, His self-proclaimed disciples (both Jeb and Ahnuld are Catholics) would sign His death warrant. And 2,000 years from now, His followers would be wearing gold needles around their necks as a symbol of their faith.

In a separate rant - last night on Anderson Cooper 360, CNN showed a package about Opus Dei. By Dan Lothian. With John Allen in the studios to talk about his new book, aptly titled... "Opus Dei". And where, may I ask, was CNN's FAV Correspondent, who most likely knows a little more about the group and its many prominent members - among them Justice Scalia of the Supremes, Dr. Navaro-Valls of the Vatican Press Office (and Delia's secret salsa and tango dancing partner), and soon-to-be-former-Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) - than Dan Lothian does. Heck, Her Hotness can even be one of them! Now, I do not know how much decision Delia has on what story pitch gets packaged, but I hope she will do deep real soon. May I suggest the liberal position on one of the following hot button topics - which no correspondent dares to touch:

- Abortion (Pro-fetus for SCOTUS!)
- Death penalty (in the U.S. alone, you have over 1,000 cases to look at)

- Gay marriage (think Sr. Elton John and his boy-toy)
- Euthanasia (Terri Schiavo may be dead, but we still talk about her)

"The Christian bloggers rejoiced over his death ..."

Why have you intentionally mistated and misrepresented what Christians are saying.

I have two compendiums on the Tookie issue, you'll note that opinions range on BOTH sides of argument.

Please feel free to dive into these opinions - then reconsider painting us with such a broad brush.

Thank you for correcting me, Dean. You have to admit though, the scale is tipped towards the right on this one.

Thanks for the response - but I respectfully disagree.

I've bee in contact with many blogging Christians who support the death penalty, I've yet to hear from one who's celebrating this sad day.

Dean -

That's just it: "Christians who support the death penalty" is such an oxymoron. I do not think anyone who supports the death penalty should call themselves a Christian, considering that so many of its religion's martyr and saints were on the receiving end of capital punishment, not to mention Jesus Christ Himself!

I am Catholic, by the way.
