Late pope’s presence, prayer life moves TV documentary reporter

VATICAN CITY (Catholic Online) – He is seen as almost single-handedly responsible for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, revered in Poland as a historical, political and religious treasure, called “the great” by some church analysts seeking to indicate the impact of his 26-year pontificate which ended with his death a year ago.

But for CNN faith and values correspondent Delia Gallagher, Pope John Paul II was, first and foremost, a man of great presence and a man of prayer, who lived an exemplary Christian life.

Gallagher guides viewers through that life well-lived in the two-hour documentary, “CNN Presents: The Last Days of Pope John Paul II,” which will premiere Saturday, April 1, at 7 p.m. (ET) and replay at 10 p.m. that day and April 2 at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Gallagher, a Catholic and former member of the Vatican press corps for seven years, spoke to Catholic Online March 24 on a day when she was working on final editions to the special report that took her to the late-pontiff’s private chapel in Krakow, Poland, and inside the papal apartments and the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City and to interviews with some of those closest to John Paul II in his final hours, to cardinals inside the conclave to elect his successor and to those involved in the sainthood process.

Let me just say that Catholic Online and soon-to-be-ex-Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Opus Dei) have a long history of "collaboration." Bleh.
