More on the Pa$$ion
I bet you don't even realize that the movie was re-released this year, around Holy Week, and it tanked. Big time. "The Passion-Recut" was supposed to be a toned-down version of the original, meaning less non-gratuitous violence. So, if the original was such a life changing event, why shouldn't a sanitized version not be the same? Afterall, didn't the movie inspire books and DVDs, conversions, confessions, redemptions?
If Delia's thesis was that the movie evoked a visual of the annual Good Friday stuff (Stations of the Cross, Passion according to John, etc.), shouldn't the movie then be an annual Good Friday tradition? Kinda like "The Ten Commandments" and the "Sound of Music" (around Christmas). Me - I have my own Holy Week movie: the new production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" - that thing is awesome! If watching The Passion was such a redeeming experience, wouldn't people want to be redeemed over and over? Or is the DVD version enough for annual renewals?
And why, oh why, did Mel feel the need to re-release this movie in the first place? He made enough money the first time - enough to buy an island! Plus he was already awarded "Man of the Year" by our very own good Delia Gallagher's magazine, Inside the Vatican. He was triumphant the first time around - why not quit while he's ahead?
If Mel's intention in re-releasing the movie (or making it in the first place) was lofty and purely spiritual - why not show it for free? Or give away DVDs? Or license it to TV networks with no commercial interruptions. And then give away ALL the profit (from the first time it was shown) to charity.
Then morons like me would shut up.
